Mission Statement

Eldergarden's Mission is to offer: A rewarding experience for seniors...Peace of mind for families...Extended independence

Program Summary

Eldergarden began in l981 as a grass-roots endeavor to provide adult daycare for seniors. Such care allows the senior to "age-in-place" and avoid expensive nursing home care. It also allows a break,or respite, for their caregiver; allowing that caregiver the opportunity to remain employed or take the opportunity to regain their own health. While at Eldergarden participants are enjoying exercise, arts and crafts, music, gardening and guest speakers on a variety of topics; plus having a healthy luncheon and snacks and having blood pressure and insulin levels monitored. Satisfaction Surveys results always meet all hoped-for outcomes. Participants are healthier mentally and physically, or have maintained, and caregivers are healthier and happier once their loved one has enrolled. Fees charged to families cover about half of the cost of providing services, and Eldergarden looks to various fundraisers and grants to make up the difference.

Wish List

Eldergarden always needs funding, since fees charged for services cover about 50% of costs. Planned giving with several options can be arranged through the Community Foundation. Volunteers are an important part of Eldergarden's program with 1,000 to 3,000 hours donated each year. Some projects such as fix-up last only one day and some people volunteer regularly to work with the program. Each month Eldergarden publishes a "wish list" in their newsletter. Newsletters can be read on the website, www.eldergarden.org. Board member's terms expire on a rotating basis, and are always desirous of adding new members.

Client Story

James developed Alzheimer's Disease before he turned 60, leaving his wife to provide all the income for their family. At first she was able to leave him at home alone while she worked, but it soon became impossible to do that. By coming to Eldergarden, James has a productive day and his wife is able to continue her employment.
